Greetings from Charmaine: July/August 2019

Greetings all,February 2019

I hope those of you who have taken a vacation enjoyed your time away.  It’s always good to let go of day-to-day worries and cares and take time to recharge our batteries.

I find it hard that this country has such apparent “disdain” for the vacation.  In South Africa, we all got 3 weeks’ vacation from day one of working and it is said you need all three….one week to unwind, one to relax and one to slowly get prepared for going back to work. Norway gets 6 weeks a year and is one of the happiest places in the world!

It is not something to brag about “I don’t need a vacation”……YES you do- unless you happen to work only half days and have a phenomenal sense of balance and spend at least an hour or two each day on self-care. That’s why so many executives and “high powered” administrators end up with all these nasty things like cancer and heart attacks…they have not taken time to recharge their batteries and have a life of balance….a lot of these “millennial” startup companies have the right idea about bringing your dog to work, having a gym on the premises, fresh food cafeterias and goof off rooms, etc.

Sages have said that we should spend a little time each day going on vacation. Every day we should do something that we especially love to do, something that’s deeply true to our purpose in life. Whether that’s making music, meditating, praying, exploring, learning, sharing heartfelt time with someone or another healthy diversion, it should be done every day. Why? So our lives will have balance.

Enjoy the summer and remember…. as the kids go back to school and get into sports….chiropractic care will keep them functioning at their best!!!

See you on the table, on the yoga mat, under the barbells or just walking around town!

Chiropractic and Disc Problems

discsYou have discs – spongy pads found between most of your vertebrae (spinal bones), in your jaw joint (TMJ) and between your pubic bones (in women, they separate a little during the birth process).

The discs help give your spine its curves and flexibility and make it better able to withstand stress. Discs also prevent your vertebrae from crashing into each other (that would hurt a lot!). And they also help create spaces (foramina) through which your nerves travel on their way to your internal organs.

But there are times your discs can cause you pain. If your discs flatten out, are twisted or bulge or are otherwise distorted, you can suffer from a lot of neck, back, leg and other pain.

Do You Have a “Slipped” Disc?

A disc cannot “slip” since it is knitted into the vertebrae from both above and below. What sometimes do slip are the vertebrae, which may stress the disc and contribute to its damage. Many “slipped discs” would be more accurately called slipped vertebrae or subluxations.

Disc damage may be due to an accident or fall (called macro-trauma) or from doing the same thing over and over (called micro-trauma). In addition, long-standing subluxations (tiny spinal distortions) can cause disc damage.

Disc damage may cause pain. The pain can get so bad people have resorted to surgery. But there’s another approach to disc problems – chiropractic!

Chiropractic has been a blessing to millions of people with spine and disc problems, often saving them from neck or back surgery (which has a very high failure rate, meaning the patient is as bad or worse after the surgery). (1)

Chiropractors have various techniques to restore the natural curve to your spine, take pressure off of discs and begin a process of healing. Before anyone you know considers back surgery, please tell them about chiropractic care. (2-3)

Can a chiropractor see things that I can’t?

Questions and Answers About Chiropractic

Question: Can a chiropractor see things that I can’t?

Answer: Yes!

Chiropractors are always “checking people out.” We can’t avoid it because we know what it means and we know we can help!

When you see people walking down the street, do you notice if their shoes are pointed in the same direction or does one stick out or in more than the other?

feet pointing

Do you notice if their heads are balanced front to back, side to side, on their necks?

head tilt

Do you notice if one hand seems to be a little lower on the body than the other hand?

shoulder

Do you notice if one arm swings a little more than the other?

If the hip swings more on one side than the other when a person walks? If, when lying down, one leg appears shorter than the other?

These, and other seemingly minor differences are common and can be very important. Yet most people don’t notice or appreciate them. But your chiropractor often notices them and sees the tremendous importance in body balance and symmetrical movement.

Now you know why top professional and Olympic athletes visit chiropractors – for better balance, coordination and movement plus more energy and efficiency of motion.

If you notice any of these things in you, or in someone you know, we can help!

What Is the World’s Greatest Drugstore?

What would the world’s greatest drugstore be like? Well, it’ll have every drug and chemical you need to live a long, healthy life, free of You are the world's greatest drug storedisease, pain and disability. The drugs from this drugstore would never have a side-effect. This drugstore would be open 24 hours a day, never close and be at your beck and call – delivery would be instantaneous. Also, all the drugs would be free.

Well, such a drugstore does exist! It’s your own body!

Related: You are the world’s greatest drug store!

Yes, every drug and chemical you need to live a long and healthy life is made by your body, in the exact right amount, just when you need it, 24 hours a day.

Your body makes drugs (chemicals) to raise your blood pressure and lower your blood pressure, relax you and make you hyper-vigilant (for example, when you are in danger); drugs to create inflammation and drugs to dissolve inflammation, painkillers and pleasure creators as powerful as heroin. Further, your body manufactures chemicals that create tumors and chemicals that dissolve tumors; chemicals to raise and lower your blood sugar; raise and lower your cholesterol and even … drugs to make you hungry, to make you feel satiated, drugs to build up bone, drugs to break down bone, drugs to build muscle, drugs to break down muscle, drugs to stimulate you as well as drugs to depress you.

These drugs are perfectly designed for your unique needs, your unique genetic expression – and they have no side-effects or adverse reactions.

Further, these drugs are made in the exact right amount and delivered to the exact part of your body that needs them at the exact moment it needs them. Some of these drugs are unique to you – no one else has them. No man-made pharmacy can do that.

Yes, get your body working at its full potential and it’ll provide you with all the drugs you need, in the right amount and tailored to your unique body – and all these drugs are natural and organic!

Americans and Canadians spend millions of dollars on tons of synthetic (unnatural) drugs each year. Every prescription and OTC (over-the-counter) drug has the potential to cause a bad reaction. In fact, tens of thousands of people die from reactions to properly prescribed medications every year. They are taking unnatural drugs because their internal pharmacy is not working to its fullest potential.

Chiropractic care, by correcting subluxations, helps to “wake up” your internal pharmacy so it will function closer to its potential. Subluxations are misalignments of your body structure that interfere with the energy and communication that travels over your brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves. Without proper communications your internal pharmacy may not get the right information to give you everything you need at a moment’s notice in the exact amount.

For your internal pharmacy to be working at 100% (or as close to it as possible) you need a body free from subluxations. For that reason, regular chiropractic care is needed by everyone!

Why do chiropractors encourage breastfeeding?

Questions and Answers About Chiropractic: Why do chiropractors encourage breastfeeding?encourage breasfeeding

Chiropractic is a natural healing art that recognizes the wisdom of nature. Nature makes a perfect food for baby for optimal brain and body development. It’s called breast milk and the advantages over anything else are many.

Benefits to baby:

  • Breastfeeding protects against infections including meningitis, bacteremia, diarrhea, respiratory tract infection, necrotizing enterocolitis, otitis media, urinary tract infection and sepsis in pre-term infants.
  • Breastfed babies have less Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (CRIB death).
  • Breastfeeding is associated with better grades in high school.
  • Breastfed babies have less diabetes, lymphoma, leukemia, Hodgkin disease, obesity and asthma.
  • Breastfed babies show enhanced cognitive development.

Benefits to mother:

  • Decreased postpartum bleeding
  • Faster return to pre-pregnancy weight
  • Natural child spacing/family planning
  • Decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancer
  • Decreased risk of hip fractures and osteoporosis after menopause

Researching Chiropractic: Asthma and Concussion

Do you know someone suffering from asthma or a concussion? Chiropractic could help!

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception and have included papers published in various bio-medical and chiropractic journals.

There seems to be no end to the physical and psychological benefits of chiropractic care.

That is because chiropractic does not “treat” any particular condition. Chiropractic care “treats” or more accurately, “corrects” a serious interference to brain, nervous system and energy function known as the subluxation.

No matter what condition you (or a loved one) may have, you will always function better when free from subluxations. Chiropractors are uniquely trained to locate and correct subluxations. Enjoy this month’s cases and see more next month.

Asthma and chiropractic6 year old boy

This case report is of a 6-year-old male presenting with a history of asthma that was diagnosed when the patient was 4 years old. His mother sought chiropractic care to help control and alleviate his symptoms that would worsen depending on the season.

A total of six chiropractic adjustments were rendered to the boy in conjunction with the recommendation of daily probiotic and omega 3 supplementation. The patient no longer needed his daily inhaler dose of Albuterol® after having received his first adjustment and was able to sleep undisturbed through the night without experiencing flare-ups.

Concussion in a 23-year-old femaleheadache

A 23-year-old female presented for chiropractic care five months after a slip and fall that resulted in a concussion. She had vertigo and a history of headaches that were made worse by the concussion. The vertigo occurred immediately following the trauma.

She received upper cervical specific chiropractic care and her symptoms resolved.

Chiropractic, lower back pain and health maintenance care

A comparison was made between chiropractors, medical doctors, and physical therapists for people who suffered from low back pain. The authors concluded: “In work related lower back pain chiropractic health maintenance had less recurrence of disability than patients treated by MDs or PTs.” Also: “Chiropractic patients had fewer surgeries, used fewer opioids (pain killers) and had lower costs.” Interestingly, if a chiropractic patient did have a recurrence it occurred on average 29 days later than those who saw PTs or MDs.”

Overall, chiropractic patients got better sooner than patients of MDs and PTs. “No health maintenance care is generally as good as chiropractic care” and perhaps most revealing is this: “Chiropractors might be preventing some of their patients from receiving procedures of unproven cost utility value or dubious efficacy.”

Researching Chiropractic: Chronic headaches, constipation, and autism

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception and have included papers published in various bio-medical and chiropractic journals.

There seems to be no end to the conditions that respond to chiropractic care – physical as well as psychological.

Chronic headache in an eight-year-oldheadache young girl

An 8-year old boy who suffered from chronic headaches for two years was brought in for chiropractic care. The headaches were described as sharp and throbbing, worse with noise, better when lying down, and located in the frontal skull area and occasionally lasted an entire day. He also suffered from sore throat, fatigue, queasiness, aches, pains and dizziness.

His parents brought him to a neurologist, psychologist and nutritionist with limited health improvements.

The child was adjusted over a  20 monthperiod. Initially his cervical x-ray showed a flat spine – there was no curve. After 6 months of care his cervical lordosis (curve) was near normal for his age. His headaches and other symptoms resolved.

Chronic constipation in a childconstipation 2

A 7-year-old-boy presented for care with complaints of chronic constipation, headaches and neck pain. The boy had suffered from constipation since the age of three. At age 5, MDs prescribed enemas (three times per week) but this gave only temporary relief. By age 6, stool softeners and the laxative MiraLAX® were prescribed. Three to four weeks prior to chiropractic care, the boy had bowel movements of once per week.    The child was adjusted over a 10 week period. The mother reported that her son had bowel movements of 5-6 times per week without the need for laxatives.

Two autism cases

Case one involves a 20-year-old autistic male who displayed aggressive behavior towards others. Case two involves a 17-year-old autistic female who abused herself.

Both patients received a trial of chiropractic care for 5 and 4 months respectively with visit frequency of once per week. Both patients responded favorably to chiropractic care with the male patient decreasing in aggressive behavior and the female patient decreasing in self-abuse and improving in socialization.

Please share with someone you know who might be encourages to help with any of these issues through gentle chiropractic care.

How many nerves come out of your spine?

Questions and Answers About Chiropractic

Question: How many nerves come out of your spine?drawing of spinal column and nerves

Answer: A lot. About 100 billion nerve cells (neurons) are in your spinal cord. Neurons are specialized cells that transmit and receive electrical impulses. They are like wires and can be as much as a few feet long or a fraction of an inch long. All 100 billion are packed into your spinal cord that is a little thicker than a pencil. Your spinal cord goes down your spine or backbone.

Your nerves inside the backbone branch off from your spinal cord and travel through little holes between your spinal bones (vertebra). These nerves connect your brain to your heart, lungs, kidneys, muscles, intestines, glands and all your other body parts.

Your brain and nerves coordinate the function of all the organs in your body so you function as a whole – so your organs all communicate with each other and all your systems work together.

But if your nerves are stressed by your spine being out of proper alignment then you will have nerve interference; messages won’t travel properly through your body. Chiropractors refer to this as a subluxation.

As a result of subluxations, your body won’t be able to function at 100% efficiency and you’ll suffer from dis-ease: your resistance may be lowered; your muscles may not work properly; your balance, brain, vision, hearing, digestion and hundreds of other things may be adversely affected.

Chiropractors are specially trained to locate and correct (adjust) subluxations. Come in for a checkup, and bring your family to make sure they are subluxation-free. Call today! 517.627.4547

Chiropractic for pets?

Is Chiropractic for pets beneficial?

Sure! Why not? Of course, chiropractic is for dogs and cats. After all, animals that have spines can have subluxations that chiropractors can correct – to the benefit of all creatures with spinal columns.

In fact, since chiropractic’s inception in the American Midwest (Davenport, Iowa) in 1895, Doctors of Chiropractic have had many different kinds of four-legged patients: dogs, cats, horses, sheep, goats, cows, bulls, etc.

Chiropractors have taken care of championship race horses, expensive show animals and everyday dogs and house cats. It’s a shame that many people don’t know about “animal chiropractic” so we have highlighted a recent chiropractic animal adjustment case study. Read it here.

A note from Dr.C.– I have been taking care of dogs, bobcats and other animals for many years and have some wonderful stories to share.
