Opioids and Chiropractic – Hope for Recovery?

America is experiencing an opioid epidemicopioids

America is experiencing an opioid epidemic or crisis due to the increase in the use of prescription and non-prescription drugs that act on the opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects. These drugs include painkillers such as OxyContin®, Percocet®,Vicodin® and fentanyl. They are strong, and also addicting, and can cause fatal overdoses. The drug sedates that part of the brain that regulates breathing which can cause respiratory failure and death.

According to the U.S.Drug Enforcement Administration the opioid problem has reached “epidemic levels.” Nearly half of all opioid overdose deaths in 2016 involved prescription opioids. Is there something that could be done? How about a drug-free approach to healthcare? How about chiropractic?

Although it’s only a single case report, this can be an inspiration for others who are hooked on prescription and recreational drugs of all kinds. In a study published in the journal Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research we see the clinical case of a 21-year-old man under chiropractic care who was an opioid addict.

The 21-year-old came to a chiropractic office suffering from opioid addiction, anxiety, depression, insomnia and cluster headaches. His medical doctors had placed him on four different medications in an attempt to manage his symptoms and withdrawal. This approach had interfered with his life; he had dropped out of college 11 months prior due to the adverse effects on his daily life as well as the destructive coping mechanisms he had adopted.

The chiropractor examined the young man, took x-rays and found structural/spinal distortions in his neck, mid-back and low back that can cause nerve interference (subluxations). In addition, x-rays also revealed scoliosis and a loss of the normal curve in his neck.

Chiropractic Care for Opioid Addiction

Chiropractic care was begun to reduce his vertebral subluxations with the result that the patient recovered from opioid addiction and was able to stop all prescribed medication. His headaches, anxiety, depression, and insomnia resolved completely.

Prior research has shown that chiropractic can have a profound effect on:

  • brain function
  • mental health
  • ADHD
  • pervasive developmental disorder
  • Tourette’s Syndrome
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • other neurodevelopmental disorders (1)

Researching Chiropractic: Multiple Sclerosis

A 26-year-old with Multiple Sclerosismultiple Sclerosis

A 26-year-old patient with multiple sclerosis, numbness and neck pain sought chiropractic care. A complete history and objective examination revealed several vertebral subluxations and a reversed neck (cervical) curve.

He was seen twelve times in one month while receiving nine adjustments for vertebral subluxation correction. His neck curve improved 60%, and neck pain, headaches and numbness greatly improved. His multiple sclerosis symptoms dramatically reduced.

Researching Chiropractic: Emotional Improvement

Sometimes Emotional Improvement Is Physicalemotional improvement

We don’t always think about emotional issues being related to physical problems, but often times there are.

Brain wave improvement & emotional improvement

A 7-year-old female had the following issues:

  • slow physical skill acquisition
  • difficulty with coordination (since birth)
  • an aversion to using utensils (preferring to use her fingers to eat)
  • emotional outbursts
  • low self-esteem

This had been going on for two years.

After two months’ of chiropractic care, analysis revealed:

  • improved brain alpha waves
  • improved coordination
  • spontaneous use of silverware for self-feeding
  • improvement in emotional regulation

Do you know anyone who is suffering from emotional issues or delayed development. Maybe chiropractic care can help. Please share this article with them.

Researching Chiropractic: Constipation

constipationChronic constipation in a 5-year-old

A 5-year-old girl suffering from abdominal pain (gastritis) and chronic constipation began chiropractic care. MDs could not find any cause. A high fiber diet and laxative use as directed by her medical doctor was not effective.

Chiropractic care was initiated. She was seen and adjusted two times a week for two weeks, followed by one visit a week for 10 weeks.

At visit number 12, the patient no longer complained of abdominal pain and the patient’s mother reported an improvement in the patient’s demeanor as well as a complete resolution of her chronic constipation.

Do you know someone who suffers from constipation and isn’t finding relief? Please share this with them. We can help!

90% Of Pregnant Women Are Refusing The Flu Shot

A mother’s instinct regarding the Flu shotflu shot

A mother’s instinct is very powerful and that may be why an overwhelming majority of pregnant women are now refusing the flu shot in spite of medical doctors telling them the vaccine is safe for their unborn baby.

A shocking report from the National Coalition of Organized Women (NCOW) presented data from two different sources demonstrating that the 2009/10 H1N1 vaccines contributed to an estimated 1,588 miscarriages and stillbirths. A corrected estimate may be as high as 3,587 cases. (1)

Alessandro Bertoucci, PhD analyzed the practices of 256 physicians treating more than 600,000 patients. He flu shotreported that 91% of pregnant women are declining influenza vaccines due to fears of miscarriage and suspected toxins in the vaccine itself.

What do you think about the Flu Shot?

Laura’s Burrito-Stuffed Sweet Potatoes

Includes recipes for Rustic Salsa and THE BEST Guacamole

Makes 2 to 4 servings

from The First Mess Cookbook  Copyright © 2017, Laura Wright.

IngredientsBurrito-Stuffed Sweet Potatoes

  • 4 small sweet potatoes (mine came to about 2 1/2 pounds total)
  • 1/2 cup uncooked brown basmati rice, rinsed
  • 1 cup cooked black beans (I used canned, rinsed and drained)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste
  • Pinch of salt

Rustic salsarustic salsa

  • 1 yellow or red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1/2 small red onion, chopped (mine came to about 3/4 cup chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro leaves
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Guacamoleguacomole

  • 1 ripe, medium avocado
  • 1/2 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves
  • Generous pinch of salt
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Place the sweet potatoes in the baking dish, and prick each one a couple of times with a fork. Slide the sweet potatoes into the oven and bake until very tender, about 45 minutes (mine took 5 to 10 minutes extra since they were a little bigger than specified).
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the basmati rice, black beans, cumin, garlic, olive oil, tomato paste and salt. Pour 1 1/4 cups water into the pot. Cover and bring to a boil over medium heat. Lower the heat to a simmer, and cook until all of the liquid is absorbed, about 40 minutes. Cover and set aside to keep the rice warm.
  4. Make the rustic salsa: In a medium bowl, combine the bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, red onions, lime juice, cilantro and olive oil. Season the mixture with salt and pepper, and toss to combine. Set aside.
  5. Make the guacamole: Peel the avocado and extract the pit. Place the avocado flesh in a medium bowl and mash with a fork. Once you’ve broken it up a bit, add the garlic, lime juice, cilantro and salt. Mash the avocado until the seasoning is evenly distributed and you have a chunky paste. Set aside.
  6. Place each baked sweet potato in a shallow bowl. Cut along the top of the sweet potato and pull back the skin. Spilt the sweet potatoes a little bit to make room for the fillings.
  7. Divide the rice and bean mixture among the sweet potatoes (spillover is fine!). Top each bowl with 1/4th of the rustic salsa. Finish each plate with a dollop of the guacamole and some shredded cabbage on top. Serve with hot sauce on the side if you wish.

A New Discovery About How Your Body Works

New Ways in Understanding How Your Body Works

You’d think we knew pretty much everything we need to know about how your body works. But we are in the dark ages in many ways. For example, earlier this year it was discovered that the brain connects to the immune system and that communication is especially important when we sleep.

How Your Body Works: The LungsHow Your Body Works

More recently, UC San Francisco scientists have discovered that the lungs do more than breathe. The lungs play an important role in blood production. Yes, blood is made in the lungs. Using a special tracking system, researchers discovered that the lungs produce more than half of the platelets – blood components needed for clotting to stop bleeding, among other critical roles, in many conditions.

Blood cells were also found to travel back and forth between the lung and bone marrow. It appears that the stem cells that produce blood travel in the bloodstream to other organs and adapt to their needs.
