Why do chiropractors spend so much time working on my back?

Because that’s where the nerves are.How many joints are in your spine?

There’s a common misconception that because chiropractors work on the spine their care is limited to spinal pain and spinal problems such as backache, disc problems, sciatica, hip or neck problems.

But that is an incomplete way of looking at things. We chiropractors locate and release spinal nerve pressure. Your body functions in a more balanced manner, with less stress on the entire system especially your internal organs. So you can heal yourself, no matter what the condition.

That’s why you’ll see children in our office with asthma, allergies, ear infections, pneumonia, colds, flu-and adults with immune conditions, headaches, migraines, infertility, menstrual problems and more!

Check out our series of Case Studies to learn more about all the ways Chiropractic care can help you and your family.

We work on your spine, because that’s where the nerves can get irritated and interfere with the information going to (and from) the internal organs. That’s why we give you adjustments there.

Researching Chiropractic: Migraines, Torticollis, & Tic douloureux

How many people suffering, on drugs, facing a life of limitation could be helped by chiropractic care? Probably most of them.

Migraine and hypnic headachesheadache

A 59-year-old woman suffered from chronic migraines and hypnic headaches (headaches that wake people from sleep) along with nausea and skin rashes. Migraine has a global prevalence of 10% and is the seventh leading cause of time spent disabled. Hypnic headaches are less common.

The patient’s migraines began 15 years prior and significantly affected her quality of life. During that time, her care consisted of RelpaxT, a prescription drug, massage and TylenolT. Her headaches continued unabated. She also recalled that her mother had migraines that began around her menopause.

Chiropractic care of two visits a week for 3 months and then once per week for 6 weeks resulted in resolution of her headaches as well as additional health benefits. (1)

Torticollis, cranial distortion and difficulty feedingbaby-303068_1920

A 13-day-old boy and his twin sister were brought in for chiropractic evaluation and possible care. The boy had torticollis, difficulty latching to his mother’s left breast and cranial distortion. The parents reported that the baby was very gassy and seemed uncomfortable daily. The pediatrician could offer no options.

The parents reported that the boy was in the head down position for most of his time in utero with the weight of his sister on top of him.

After analysis for subluxations of his spine and skull, the boy was adjusted while he was lying on a pillow on his back or on his mother’s chest while she was lying on her back on the chiropractic table.

The child had seven visits over 6 weeks with continued improvements. He was able to latch onto both breasts, the gassiness had decreased and the torticollis had resolved. Improvements were noticed by his third appointment. (2)

Tic douloureuxperson-2438587_1280

Trigeminal neuralgia, also known as “tic douloureux,” is a chronic nerve disorder characterized by intense, persistent and often debilitating shooting sensations of pain in the face. The pain is so intense people have killed themselves and for that reason it is sometimes called the “suicide disease.”

A 62-year-old woman came to a chiropractic clinic with a chief complaint of chronic right-sided facial pain of 2 years’ duration which she said felt like stabbing and throbbing, “like a bunch of pitch forks.”

She had experienced three separate automobile accidents over the past 27 years but had no residual symptoms. The pain began four months after she had had a dental surgical procedure, either a filling or root canal on a wisdom tooth on the right side of her face. Over the course of two years, numerous prescription drugs and alternative supplements had been prescribed by multiple doctors and specialists. She had spent over $9,000 in personal funds seeking relief.

Over the course of six months, the patient received 26 chiropractic adjustments. As a result, she experienced significant reductions in frequency and duration of pain. (3)

Are people under chiropractic care healthier?

Answer: Not only healthier but happier too!happy man

Making chiropractic care a regular part of your life will help you and your family on many levels. Keeping your spine and nervous system free of subluxations (nerve interference) is good for your brain, organs, and entire body and mind.

Studies reveal that people under chiropractic care experience wellness in many areas of their lives. For example, chiropractic patients in two studies reported improved physical and mental/emotional health, better ability to deal with stress and more life enjoyment. (1-2)

Another study revealed that chiropractic patients reported improved physical functioning, less bodily pain, improved general health, greater vitality, better social functioning and improved mental health. (3)

Chiropractic has been especially effective with improving the life of the elderly. In one study of people 75 years of age and older, those under chiropractic care enjoyed better overall health, fewer chronic conditions, less days in nursing homes and hospitals, more mobility and were less likely to use prescription drugs than non-chiropractic patients. 87% of chiropractic patients described their health as excellent compared to just 67.8% of non-chiropractic patients. The Magic of Chiropractic

The magic of the chiropractic adjustment

At the moment that you receive a chiropractic adjustment to correct your subluxations, hundreds, if not thousands, of your body functions and activities are affected. The flow of nerve impulses over your brain, spinal cord, spinal (and other) nerves to your internal organs and tissues is normalized, and your body begins to re-balance, renew, and rebuild itself.

Many patients report a feeling of relaxation, or a warm soothing feeling in various parts of their bodies. Some feel very relaxed or energetic, or both! Most people find that the health conditions that brought them to their chiropractor soon begin to lessen. Some people however, may initially feel no difference. A person may initially feel muscle soreness or some other uncomfortable feeling after an adjustment.

What causes these reactions?

Some reactions are a detoxification; it’s good to drink a lot of water afterwards. Sometimes weak, underused muscles may become sore for a brief period as they strengthen.

Old injuries that haven’t healed completely may “reawaken” for more complete healing. Memories and feelings associated with the original injury may also come to the surface. This phenomenon is known as “retracing” and is part of the healing process.

Some people are in such good general health that they may feel no difference, while others may feel no difference for the opposite reason – they are so ill or toxic that they have lost sensitivity to their body.

As you continue your care…

You may begin to notice:

  • Better balance, smoother movement and more energy.
  • Increased awareness of your spine and body stress.
  • Increased ability to breathe more deeply.
  • An increased desire to exercise, go for walks, and play.

The most important benefits

The true benefits of the adjustment are usually found below the level of consciousness. It is when the nerve communication to the heart, lungs, joints, sexual organs, skin, eyes, ears, and the brain itself are improved that the true benefits of chiropractic are experienced.

Can a chiropractor see things that I can’t?

Questions and Answers About Chiropractic

Question: Can a chiropractor see things that I can’t?

Answer: Yes!

Chiropractors are always “checking people out.” We can’t avoid it because we know what it means and we know we can help!

When you see people walking down the street, do you notice if their shoes are pointed in the same direction or does one stick out or in more than the other?

feet pointing

Do you notice if their heads are balanced front to back, side to side, on their necks?

head tilt

Do you notice if one hand seems to be a little lower on the body than the other hand?

shoulder

Do you notice if one arm swings a little more than the other?

If the hip swings more on one side than the other when a person walks? If, when lying down, one leg appears shorter than the other?

These, and other seemingly minor differences are common and can be very important. Yet most people don’t notice or appreciate them. But your chiropractor often notices them and sees the tremendous importance in body balance and symmetrical movement.

Now you know why top professional and Olympic athletes visit chiropractors – for better balance, coordination and movement plus more energy and efficiency of motion.

If you notice any of these things in you, or in someone you know, we can help!

Researching Chiropractic: Chronic headaches, constipation, and autism

Chiropractic clinical case histories have been a regular feature of our patient newsletter since its inception and have included papers published in various bio-medical and chiropractic journals.

There seems to be no end to the conditions that respond to chiropractic care – physical as well as psychological.

That is because chiropractic does not “treat” a particular condition. Chiropractic care “treats” or, more accurately, “corrects” a serious interference to brain, nervous system and energy function known as the subluxation.

No matter what condition you or a loved one may have, you will always function better when free from subluxations. Chiropractors are uniquely trained to locate and correct subluxations.

Chronic headache in an eight-year-oldheadache young girl

An 8-year old boy who suffered from chronic headaches for two years was brought in for chiropractic care. The headaches were described as sharp and throbbing, worse with noise, better when lying down, and located in the frontal skull area and occasionally lasted an entire day. He also suffered from sore throat, fatigue, queasiness, aches, pains and dizziness.

His parents brought him to a neurologist, psychologist and nutritionist with limited health improvements.

The child was adjusted over a  20 monthperiod. Initially his cervical x-ray showed a flat spine – there was no curve. After 6 months of care his cervical lordosis (curve) was near normal for his age. His headaches and other symptoms resolved.

Chronic constipation in a childconstipation 2

A 7-year-old-boy presented for care with complaints of chronic constipation, headaches and neck pain. The boy had suffered from constipation since the age of three. At age 5, MDs prescribed enemas (three times per week) but this gave only temporary relief. By age 6, stool softeners and the laxative MiraLAX® were prescribed. Three to four weeks prior to chiropractic care, the boy had bowel movements of once per week.    The child was adjusted over a 10 week period. The mother reported that her son had bowel movements of 5-6 times per week without the need for laxatives.

Two autism cases

Case one involves a 20-year-old autistic male who displayed aggressive behavior towards others. Case two involves a 17-year-old autistic female who abused herself.

Both patients received a trial of chiropractic care for 5 and 4 months respectively with visit frequency of once per week. Both patients responded favorably to chiropractic care with the male patient decreasing in aggressive behavior and the female patient decreasing in self-abuse and improving in socialization.

Please share with someone you know who might be encourages to help with any of these issues through gentle chiropractic care.

How many nerves come out of your spine?

Questions and Answers About Chiropractic

Question: How many nerves come out of your spine?drawing of spinal column and nerves

Answer: A lot. About 100 billion nerve cells (neurons) are in your spinal cord. Neurons are specialized cells that transmit and receive electrical impulses. They are like wires and can be as much as a few feet long or a fraction of an inch long. All 100 billion are packed into your spinal cord that is a little thicker than a pencil. Your spinal cord goes down your spine or backbone.

Your nerves inside the backbone branch off from your spinal cord and travel through little holes between your spinal bones (vertebra). These nerves connect your brain to your heart, lungs, kidneys, muscles, intestines, glands and all your other body parts.

Your brain and nerves coordinate the function of all the organs in your body so you function as a whole – so your organs all communicate with each other and all your systems work together.

But if your nerves are stressed by your spine being out of proper alignment then you will have nerve interference; messages won’t travel properly through your body. Chiropractors refer to this as a subluxation.

As a result of subluxations, your body won’t be able to function at 100% efficiency and you’ll suffer from dis-ease: your resistance may be lowered; your muscles may not work properly; your balance, brain, vision, hearing, digestion and hundreds of other things may be adversely affected.

Chiropractors are specially trained to locate and correct (adjust) subluxations. Come in for a checkup, and bring your family to make sure they are subluxation-free. Call today! 517.627.4547

Your Brain and Spinal Chord: An Important Connection

Did you realize how important the connection is between your brain and spinal chord?brain and spinal chord

Your brain extends down your back as your spinal cord – a collection of billions of nerves wrapped in a tight bundle.

Messages from your brain travel down nerves through your spinal cord, branch out and reach all your muscles, glands, joints, ligaments and organs. This communication is essential for ideal health.

It’s so important that your spinal cord is surrounded by bones – your spinal column – permitting movement plus providing protection. Sometimes your spinal bones lock up or subluxate and irritate the very nerves they are supposed to protect. The result can be dis-ease or body malfunction.

The goal of your chiropractor is to locate these areas of stress – subluxations – that cause body malfunction, and correct them. DC means more than Doctor of Chiropractic – it means Doctor of Cause.

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Chiropractic care can help with all sort of things. Even things that are hard to pronounce like Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Ankylosing Spondylitis in a 38-year-oldankylosing spondylitis

A 38-year-old man entered a chiropractor’s office complaining of upper back pain, neck pain, left groin and bilateral buttock pain, right patella and right medial heel pain. Ten years prior, the patient sought medical consultation with a rheumatologist and was diagnosed with Reiter’s Syndrome, which was later amended to Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). He was told he’d continue to deteriorate over the years.

Medical care consisted of Pamidronate and Alendronate (prescription medications) that he had discontinued on his own.

The patient reported relief of all his pain symptoms, increased mobility and improved posture. He had 16 appointments for care over a one-year period with constant improvement. He continues care on a periodic basis.

If I’m feeling fine do I really need chiropractic care?

Questions and Answers About Chiropractic

Question: If I’m feeling fine do I really need chiropractic care?

Answer: More than ever. Why? If I'm feeling fine do I really need chiropractic care

By the time a person has symptoms they may have been in a weakened, dis-ease state for a long time. Don’t wait until you have serious symptoms; chiropractic can locate hidden blockages or interferences to proper function (subluxations) now before they become more obvious and painful or disturbing later.

It’s sometimes helpful to think of chiropractic as you would dental care. For example, you may have dental cavities, an infected root canal or other dental infections and yet you may feel no pain. All the while, there is a problem silently festering, sometimes for years, that may be affecting your entire body and can ultimately ruin your health. You get your teeth checked periodically – what about your spine and structural system? That’s where chiropractic comes in.

You can also think of chiropractic care as similar to good nutrition – always important to maintain good health and absolutely necessary if a person has a health problem.

Want to make sure you are healthy?

Visit your chiropractor for a checkup on a regular basis.

So even though you might be feeling fine you may be carrying in your body serious stress causing dis-ease preventing you from functioning at your potential.

So, do you really need to come in for chiropractic care if you aren’t in pain or suffering from a disease? Absolutely. Don’t wait until there is long-standing stress and possible damage. Make an appointment today.
